What to know about mold
The most common indoor molds are Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery. In the mitigation industry we refer these substances as porous materials.
How does it spread?
Mold can enter through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the air outside can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, and pets can and be carried indoors. Concern is due when elevated spore counts are present, typically a symptom of a water infiltration or moisture issue in your home or business. Disturbing visible mold can also spread the spores by aerosolizing them. Attempting to clean with hydrophobic cleaners such as bleach can aerosolize the spores. How does it affect people?
Mold is found everywhere, indoors and outdoors - its part of nature. When exposed to excessive mold growth, some people experience symptoms like allergies, wheezing, respiratory issues, and headaches. Some molds may carry mycotoxins as well, which are poisonous if eaten, absorbed, or inhaled.
